This is a newsgroups, not a social circle. I've got real friends and family
I can spend time with. Why the hell would I want to meet a bunch of strangers
who I mostly disagree with anyway?

Many newsgroups are social circles; indeed, that's why newsgroups were
set up.

Here's a video of someone explaining "the Internet" in about 1993, which
at the time *was* Usenet (plus email & ftp).

Short of asking them we'll never know the originators motivations but I suspect
socialising wasn't top of the list especially when it originally had to run
over UUCP.

Plus MUDs, MOOs, IRC, Archie and 101 other things lost to history.
I've been on t'internet since 1991 so I know how it was. In some ways it
was more fun.
