Default Intercity seat reservation only - is it possible at E. Croydon?

This must have been early noughties, and I'm sure it was Virgin. And
the only time I reserve a train seat is from London to N/cle -
journey is 3 hours plus.

After British Rail, the East Coast mainline was run by the Great
Northern division of WAGN (West Anglia and Great Norhern) until 2006,
after which the service has been run by First Capital Connect.

GNER, NXEC etc, not having much to do with it then?

I've definitely used GNER on that route. For some reason Virgin got
stuck in my memory. They're handy to blame for everything, I suppose.
If they flew you into space, you'd probably get abducted by an alien...

I have made two trips via Virgin. On the first, I had reserved a
seat via website, but on boarding the train, it had NOT been
reserved. Luckily it wasn't busy that day, and I got an empty seat
no problem. On the second trip, they forgotten to load the food
and drink for the buffet car, so from London, there was nothing
available unitl we got to York and arrangements were made. As the
joke goes, the name "Virgin" should be changed, because it's
f*cked! :-)

I wonder whether East Coast know that Virgin are running trains from
London to York?

I think you'll find Virgin have never operated London - York. They
ran to York with CrossCountry trains until they lost the franchise.

In the early days of VXC they used to serve Paddington. Did any of these
trains ever go to York?

Until recently they also served London (Kensington Olympia). I think most
of those trains went to the North West, though maybe some went to York.

Back in 1988, I took a 2-week All Line Rover, and my first journey (other
than getting into London) was a train from Paddington to York - left at
09:17 on a Saturday morning, and arrived in York at 14:54. When I did it we
had a rake of vacuum-braked NSE-liveried stock hauled by 47489.

When I planned my trip I went in tot he booking office at Waterloo to buy
the Rover and make some reservations. The clerk there didn't believe me when
I had this leg from Paddington to York - "they go from Kings Cross" she
said. I finally convinced her to try it. She was quite surprised when it
came up!

This is a London group - so is anyone actually aware that there is a
world beyond NSE-land...?
