Why whats wrong with recycling our waste into fertiliser instead of

letting some company make a profit from cleaning up our ****?, The Roads and
the water are paid for by direct taxation, we should not be paying a pennt
for toll roads and water is the fuel of life companies should notbe allowed
to profit from it.

Plenty of people are happy (well- 'uncomplaining' might be a better word)
about the dozens of prior examples of similar 'pay to drive' facilities:

Severn Bridge x2
Humber Bridge
Dartford crossings
Mersey crossings
etc

None of which would have been built by the Government in power at the

I agree with you but it isnt in their interests to invest in public
transport. Government needs cars on the road to keep the tax rolling
in,local authorities are happy to leave the cars on the road and not
invest in public transport because they have more important matters to
finance such as Bengali transaltors, outreach workers and fairness
co-ordinators. I kid you not,the fairness co-ordinators job recently
appeared in the Manchester Evening News and was sought by Bolton Metro

Whether they are "happy" or just tolerant is another issue. These
schemes are different in that they are crossings of some kind,i.e
short lengths, not entire motorways, and they are in place of something
which often wasnt there before i.e we need to cross a river, lets build
a bridge or tunnel. There already is an M6 motorway,we dont need
another,we just need government to maintain the existing one. They
wont do this becuase they want to take OUR tax and yet let a private
initiative tear up OUR country to make profit for THEMSELVES ,not the
people.

Quite right about the private funding bit of building bridges, however I
seem to remember that when the Dartford Crossing was built the toll was
eventually meant to be phased out. That was 2 years ago.
Funny that at the time the gov. done a survey and said that if the tolls
were phased out, more people would use the crossing thereby causing more
hold-ups! I don't suppose for an instant it the fact that the crossing
generates approx. 50 million per annum. And they've obviously never been
there most mornings from 6-8 or afternoons between 2.30-6.
As for complaining, I think everybody has complained at one time or another
regarding the fact that a toll crossing exists in the middle of one of
Britain's busiest motorways. So why should we the general public pay to use
a road that has already paid for from taxes of one kind or another?
After all if my costs increase to move goods from AtoB, who do you think I
pass that cost on to?

That's fine. However, it doesn't change the fact that the government should
still build a publicly-funded alternative to the M6 - we shouldn't be in the
situation where congestion is so bad that we have to use a private pay-extra
option. It's like giving up on the NHS and telling everyone to get private

The thing is, if you build the M6 bypass from general taxation, then you are
effectively subsidising those who use it. You might argue that motorists at
large will pay for it, and motorists at large will benefit from it, but in
reality it is only a small group of people who will benefit from it, yet if
it were paid for through general taxation, a large group of people would be
paying for it.

The Government should not be subsidising things that bring a high benefit
(and have a high cost) to a small number of people.

Besides, if it weren't going to be a toll road, it would fill up with
traffic and be no better than the normal M6, and we would be back to square
one despite having spent £900 million.

be paying for it.

That's the whole point of the state paying for things. The point is that
overall everyone gains equally. The BNRR in the Midlands, M25 widening in
London, M74 in Scotland, etc.

The Government should not be subsidising things that bring a high
benefit (and have a high cost) to a small number of people.

In that case we should adopt the American model of very low taxes but
nothing provided by the state. Why should I be subsidising the NHS when I
haven't used it in 10 years? Same argument.
The answer being that I might need to use the NHS tomorrow, and you might
need to use the M6 Toll tomorrow.
It benefits everybody and the economy as a whole. If a lorry carrying goods
from Felixstowe to Manchester gets stuck in M6 traffic jams for hours,
businesses in Manchester lose out. It has a national impact.

Besides, if it weren't going to be a toll road, it would fill up with
traffic and be no better than the normal M6, and we would be back
to square one despite having spent £900 million.

It would fill up as-is, yes. What they should have done would be to build it
with no local junctions - just access from the M6 and M42 at either end.
That way, only long-distance traffic uses it, there are no new business
parks or shopping centres built next to it, and it serves its purpose as a
long-distance strategic route.

Ideally, yes. But no-one (e.g. county council, etc) would allow that to go
through their region without some benefit for local traffic to offset the
impact of the new route, i.e. extra junctions. Same applies for new
railways - look at the case of the CTRL domestic trains and Ebbsfleet as
sweeteners for the line being built through Kent.

What difference would it make? Labour have supposedly spent
billions extra on the NHS in the last few years, no
improvement. Eliminate the waste, the thousands of
unnecessary admin staff - and spend the savings on new
roads.

Who says there are thousands of unnecessary admin staff ?

The RCN, The BMA for starters.

what country are you living in whereby local councils do not purposely
create congestion, because they certainly do in London. And are you also
denying the govt doesn't steal a large percentage of road tax that it uses
on non-road issues? tunnel vision and non-reality, looks like you suffer
both, you maroon.

Yup they have done it deliberatly round here, created congestion spots at

certain junctions and choke points, reset traffic lights to favour empty
feeder roads against roads that have the traffic etc.

For what purpose?

eh? you really must be very thick, only a small percentage of our road
tax is spent on roads and then they want us to pay extra to travel on
certain roads, where is the logic in that you total moron? if you had a
brain you'd realise the obvious answer is that more of our road tax
should be spent on the roads, not stolen/wasted elsewhere.

Very interesting (though biased) the new relief road is entirely
privately funded, you either choose to use it or you don't.

Don't most of the government already have private health care?

Same argument. The answer being that I might need to use the NHS
tomorrow,

And if you have a heart attack tomorrow and can't find your credit

principle? I think not.
