Has there been any news about whether the GW electrification beyond
Airport Junction is going ahead?

Electrification from Airport Junction to Maidenhead is already covered as
part of the Crossrail project, which as we know now is definitelyhappening.
A report in the FT has suggested that there will be a government
announcement encompassing GWML electrification (west of Maidenhead) amongst
other things next Thursday (11 Nov).

Rumours persist that, under the Coalition's plans, the electrification
will not extend beyond Cardiff. So expect lots of bleating from
people further west, notably from Swansea.

I still can't see the point of a new truncated electrification, and
corresponding reduction in through services, in an unelectrified
desert, when it makes so much more sense to fill in the MML (or just
not bother).

There have to be a thousand more worthwhile things to do on the
railways with the amount of money involved.

Why should the uk government pay for any electrification in wales? Let the
welsh assembly pay for it out of their dowry since they're so keen to
pretend they're a proper government.

Its always struck me as odd that the MML hasn't been electrified to at
least nottingham since the wires already go to Bedford anyway which is almost
halfway there.

Although I live in Nottingham, it wouldn't make sense to electrify just
that branch. Either do Derby (or probably all the way to Sheffield) as
well, or truncate at Leicester.

Nottingham is the largest city in the east midlands so its the obvious
destination and would include leicester anyway. Derby and sheffield could be
added in when funds became available.
