Tube maintenance brought in-house?
 

BBC London News on BBC1 is reporting this tonight - but I'm confused.
After Metronet failed and TfL bought out the Tube Lines contract I
thought it all already *was* in house. Can someone explain to me what
today's news is all about?

I thought Tube Lines had yet to be completely brought in-house?

AIUI they have taken over maintenance of the Jubilee Line /trains/ from
Alstom (I think at the end of the contract or at a break-point). Alstom
still maintains the Northern Line trains.

AIUI, Tube Lines is now a wholly owned subsidiary of TfL, but is still
organisationally separate from LU (which now includes ex-Metronet) -
the plan is to merge it into LU over time.

I saw the late local news bulletin on the Beeb which featured this
story - the report did eventually mention it was about the trains
once, but otherwise it was pretty vague, e.g. there was no mention of
Alstom (what I saw might have been a shorter edit though). I can
imagine there being many viewers who had some idea about the demise of
the infracos who would have been a bit bemused by the report - they
should have specifically flagged up that it concerned the trains from
the beginning. (Indeed, UIVMM, the Alstom/ Jubilee line trains deal
predates the PPP, just like the Alstom/ Northern line PFI contract.)

Is it? * Where did you hear that then?

I thought it was stated at the time of the takeover that the long term
plan was to do the same for Tube Lines as for Metronet (which was also
run as an arms-length subsidiary for a couple of years after TfL
rescued it). That may have been press speculation rather than truth
though.

Still, it would seem odd if that *wasn't* the plan...

be fair may in part be things I missed due to inattention rather than
errors on the part of the BBC).
