I dunno if one would say it was closed as part of the Thameslink Programme -
the new station at St Pancras was built as part of the CTRL works (though
absurdly it wasn't fitted out at the time, with the fit-out occurring
later) - however said CTRL works at St Pancras included the bored and
cut-and-covered link tunnels from the Thameslink line to the Great Northern/
ECML which are part of the overall Thameslink Programme game plan. So, it's
all kinda intermeshed.


At one time the Kings Cross Thameslink, or Widened Lines, station had
Metropolitan Line platforms. That side was closed much earlier and
replaced with the 'tube' style station further to the west.

It was a similar layout to Farringdon. The new station was under
construction during the war, and I believe that the original one was
damaged by bombing before the new one was completed. Unless things
have changed totally since I was last there a few years ago the
central concourse between the platforms of the new station is the
original running tunnel.

That's the new (1940s) LUL station. AIUI the eastbound platform had started
life as an uncompleted tunnel to extend the Widened Lines further west. This
tunnel, built in the 1860s was unused until 1926, when a single track was
laid connecting the outer rail of the Circle Line to the eastbound Widened
Lines, and was used by Metropolitan Line trains terminating at Moorgate.
When the new Circle Line station was built, this tunnel became the eastbound
platform tunnel.

I seem to remember seeing a blackboard on the platform in the 1970s
which said something to the tune of " platform closed temporarily "
This had AIUI been there since the war
Can anyone confirm this

That would have been for the West-facing bay between the current platforms
at the 1940s LUL station, surely?

Actually, it had to be extended to serve this purpose. The original
tunnel ended about where King's Cross St.Pancras station is now; the
single track started at Chalton Street Junction, 220m west of the
mid-point of the station.
