Default Low fare surprise

For the first time in ages, and mainly because the wife needed the car,
I took the Tube to Heathrow, and not even the Heathrow Express. Journey
both ways was Dalston Junction, Whitechapel, Barons Court, Terminal 5.
Not only was it fairly painless bar some overcrowding on part of the
District (Chelsea at home on the way out) the off peak fare is only
£2.90 each way, much lower than I thought, as I've found from checking
my Oyster history.

If you had used the Single Fare Finder and avoided Zone 1, you could
have done it for £1.40 via either Gunnersbury and Turnham Green or
Willesden Junction, West Brompton (or Kensington Olympia) and Earl's
Court. To achieve those fares, you would have had to touch on the pink
card reader on the Oyster route validator at Gunnersbury or West
Brompton or Kensington Olympia.

I don't know if fraud would be alleged if you used any of those pink
validators and travelled via zone 1. e.g. with Dalston Junction,
Whitechapel, West Brompton, Earl's Court, Terminal 5.

cf. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/tickets/fa...efinder/curren
t/default.aspx?mode=alternate&on=Dalston+Junction&dn =Heathrow+Terminal+5

Let's see what the Journey Planner has to say.
There is no way to exclude Heathrow Express and allow London Overground.
I ask for journeys via osterley to achieve the desired result.
http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/use...language=en&ty
pe_via=station&name_via=osterley&sessionID=0&itdDa te=20120416&type_origi
n=stop&name_origin=Dalston+Junction&type_destinati on=stop&name_destinati
on=Heathrow+Terminal+5&itdTime=956

This gives
Time Route
1:23 Dalston Junction, Highbury & Islington, King's Cross St.Pancras,
Heathrow Terminal 5
1:16 Dalston Junction, Dalston Kingsland, Highbury & Islington,
Green Park, Heathrow Terminal 5

Although it is not possible to constrain routes via West Brompton to
avoid the Heathrow Express, some Piccadilly routes are given.
e.g.
http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/use...language=en&ty
pe_via=station&name_via=west+brompton&sessionID=0& itdDate=20120416&type_
origin=stop&name_origin=Dalston+Junction&type_dest ination=stop&name_dest
ination=Heathrow+Terminal+5&itdTime=956

gives
Time Route
1:40 Dalston Junction, Highbury & Islington, Victoria, West Brompton,
Earl's Court, Heathrow Terminal 5

I don't believe it is possible to use the Journey Planner to plan one
journey via Whitechapel without using the Heathrow Express.
I leave a two journey plan as an exercise.

I might suggest Overground as an extra mode to Journey Planner support,
but have never found them responsive. There is a real mode distinction
on ticket validity. i.e. Oyster is not valid on Heathrow Express or on
Heathrow Connect between West Drayton and Heathrow and Freedom passes
are not valid on most rail services before 09:30 Monday - Friday.
There is also an unsupported "avoid zone 1" mode.

P.S. http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/bcl...ST2?language=e
n produces results which are almost pure text. However, it lacks
earliest, earlier, later, and latest controls.
