There are two entrances to the Ruislip Manor Metropolitan/Piccadilly line station, one either side of the bridge. On the wall of the bridge on either side, over the passenger entrances to the station, there has been an 'Underground' sign on a metal board as you see everywhere.
Last week the white backed sign was removed, and in its place is a much bigger old-style Underground sign - big "U" and "D", smaller "ndergroun". It's similar, but not quite the same, as the original sign from 1938 as seen in the photo at http://goo.gl/Gwe0l0 on the London Transport Museum photo archive. It's garishly floodlit though, and rather than looking 'retro' is looks more 'Las Vegas'. Photo of the original (as in the last 15 years) and the new old sign side by side he http://goo.gl/nolNR Is this common? It seems a bit late for it to be part of the 150 yrs of the Met line, and I've noticed no other station replacing a modern sign with an old one. Short of the people sitting in the ticket office with a 'Use the machines' board in the window making it obvious they don't want to have to talk to passengers, the station itself is pretty much unmanned so there's nobody to ask there. |

Just take a look. I don't know if LU150 triggered it, but the Underground is definitely restoring more of its classic look. |

Here's a couple of examples from the next two stations up from you, Eastcote and Rayners Lane: http://goo.gl/maps/0v4qn http://goo.gl/maps/dZ4QX As you can probably make out, these somewhat weathered signs have obviously been up for a while. As a relatively quiet station, Ruislip Manor was probably just further down the priority list for updating. In fact, it's getting quite hard to find stations which still have the plainer roundel. |

I thought newly fitted signs were on white backgrounds and that anything not in the standard font was older, and probably much much older - before today's font was standardised. I wrongly assumed that when these things are got round to, that the old style was being replaced with the white one. It seems to break all their own rules to fit the old style ones! There's loads of instructions on what is allowed for signage, and only one page for Heritage Stations - http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloa...04.pdf#page=63 Until I looked just now at a bunch of stations on Google Streetview, I didn't realise how few white ones there actually a I could think of Turnham Green and Hillingon (http://goo.gl/maps/Q3l9j, http://goo.gl/maps/7S7D7) but couldn't even find any others when looking! There are many more of the 3D ones on sticks than I realised. |

It's a shame they put up one of the plainer versions, quite so recently and quite so large, at Kings Cross (exit towards "the lands"): http://www.thelightlab.com/wp-conten...t-kings-cross- underground-station-london/6_0.jpg Is this the largest roundel on the system, or is there a bigger one anywhere else?? -- Roland Perry |

I'm not sure what the policy is, but the plain roundel does seem to be deployed quite often, including on the trains themselves. Maybe the ornate heritage style is just for main station signs? |

The one at Brixton looks twice as big as that. Didn't we have this discussion a few months ago? https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?clien...ed=0CAoQ_AUoAg |
