We can already see that, with the 1992 TS due to be replaced by the NTfL when it's only about 35 years old. Plus the fleet has already had all its bogies changed and a lot of the motor mounts. same time. As you often point out, the thick walls make them feel tight inside, and I find the seats very uncomfortable. I think the seats are just cloth on top of metal or plastic. I suppose they thought that given the victoria line is a short line with short journeys they didn't need to bother with a comfortable seat. Pity. -- Spud |

The style of the lighting in the Central Line stock makes it look quite classy - I think it's the way it is diffused. But I'd go with LED spots on new stock for the same effect, personally. Will any new stock in future not have LED lights? It's close to a tipping point. Yes, I'm sure you're right. The NTfL makes extensive use of LEDs, including green/red illuminated strips on the door edges and white/red LED strips on the front/back. The internal ad/info panels are also LED screens, so I'm sure the lights will be, too. One of the aims of the NTfL is to cut energy use, and LEDs are one small step. |

Though I suppose I did grow up with them (well, the internally identical 507s and 508s) on Merseyrail. I'd take an LU C stock over a Silverstink 313 any day! (When LO took over, they started doing bizarre and unknown things such as cleaning them...) |

I suspect the chances of any of the modern stock lasting 50 years without a virtual rebuild (as opposed to a refurb) is close to zero. They're simply not built as strongly inside or out. The 2009 stock on the victoria line is already starting to look a bit worn out internally in places. When the A stock was built, the idea that it would have lasted 50 years was unimaginable. I think the oldest of the EMU stock it replaced was 35 years old and the locomotives under 40. Some steam carriage stock my have been as old (ignoring the special case of the Chesham set). Perhaps no one was as pessimistic as would have proved to be justified about the lack of willingness of coming governments to invest in the network... |

The idea is that all the ad panels would be dynamic LED screens (much as many already are on the escalators), which could switch to info panels to provide real-time info on station closures, delays, ticket info, etc. Presumably this also means that they'll be able to display moving ads, though hopefully silently. |

Neil I think that the coverings over the lights could have been better, rather than those flimsy metal covers. Really, they could have done better on that. |
