Default Finsbury park mysery tunnel

When you go northboard on a picc train just leaving finsbury park station if
you look left out of the train there is a large empty space in the tunnel
and what looks like a small tunnel or cavity disappearing south from it going
back behind the station wall. Anybody know what this is or was?

It's something like this:

The running lines for the Picadilly and Victoria (the latter using the
platforms formerly of the GN line into Moorgate) was 'swapped', I believe
during the 1960s, to allow cross-platform interchange between the two
northbound and southbound lines respectively - e.g. the Picc. is only

using
one of it's original tunnels, and one of the Vic/GM ones, and vice versa.

This means that there are little bits of runinng tunnel abandoned (or

saved
for stock transfer/emergency purposes) where the lines have been diverted

to
different platforms.

I don't think its a running tunnel , it doesn't look big enough, but then
its hard to tell just looking out the window into the dark.

The bit you can see is a blocked up tube tunnel where the original line
was diverted. There is also one on the west/southbound but not quite as
obvious (well, to the driver anyway).

Others will be along to be able to say exactly which old line it was.

The eastbound Picc uses it's original alignment and platform.
The northbound Victoria uses the former westbound Piccadilly platform.
The westbound Piccadilly uses the former northbound GN&C platform.
The southbound Victoria uses the former southbound GN&C platform.

Note the larger than usual diameter of the last two station tunnels built to
accommodate mainline loading gauge rolling stock.

According to http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acro.../ltfinpark.gif ,
the Northbound Picc was not interfered with in the 1960s, so the explanation
being offered by half a dozen people is not the right one.

That's why my vehicle's the Piccadilly Line -
It's the size of a county and it comes every two and a half minutes
