Default Oyster pre-pay on Buses from 2 January

Bit of poor planning by TfL not throttling the supply in the run-up to the
new fares, the extra cash would be better off going on the transport system,
not to the ticket agent.

But it seems the flaw in the system is that the agents have stockpiled the
tickets in readiness for a £1.80 additional profit after 2 January. To me
the auditing of stock supplies and sales to the pass agents isn't properly
controlled, what should happen is that sales ought to pass through the same
system used to issue Travelcards and Bus Passes.

Except they have a contract with TfL and I'm sure keeping old stocks back
to sell at a huge profit could backfire on the agent if TfL found out.

Erm ... We do live in a free market economy!

I think it is up to individual agents on how they wish to proceed. When
I asked mine, the opinion was expressed that much more profit had been
achieved by selling VERY large numbers of saver packs at the "old" price
in the last 6 weeks than could ever have been achieved by artificially
restricting sales until the new prices take effect in January. As she
said, if they didn't sell them, the rivals would ... so what is the
point of restricting sales until such time as the market is already
satiated?

If this is true, TfL are making it remarkably difficult for the public
to find out about it. There's nothing on the TfL or London Buses site
that I can see, and it's not in the fares leaflet. What was the form of
the "TfL publicity dated 24th December"? It's not in their published
press releases.

My local rag carried an advert last week with the banner "Money off" giving
the new bus and tram fares and the date of 27th February for the peak Oyster
fares. That's the only place I've seen it apart from on this thread.

Yes, I'd heard about that and was just about to read it.

I should add that as well as the 1/3rd page "money off" advert, the local
rag had a similar sized one on the page before saying "40p off" and
projecting the 80p Oyster fares as a special offer :-)
