Stretched SUV

In Mile End tonight I watched with amazement at a what can only be
described as a genuine american-style stretched SUV.

Funny thing was, the numberplates were'nt in any script I couldrecognise.
Not Japanese, Chinese, Latin, Cyrillic or Arabic. I assume it's exempt
from the congestion charge in that case.

As it's not hard to hide a stretched SUV, why dod they police fail to pull
these types of vehicles over?

I think that just leaves Greek, Korean and Cambodian. And possibly
Nepalese, though I'm not sure about that one.

Given that you watched with amazement, you obviously don't see many of
them, so how do you know?

What did this one do, anyway?

The unreadable numberplate which you helpfully snipped.

Oh, if it was the unreadable number plates that were at issue,
it's a good thing you used such a helpful subject as
"Stretched SUV."

Did you see the stretched SUV with unreadble number plates
pass any police vehicles?

They aught to. Drifting OT given this is utl but I was out in
Manchester the other week and was getting a lift home in a taxi when a
stretched Porsche Cayenne with those "bling" revolving hub-caps pulled
up alongside us. The taxi driver nearly creamed his pants :)

I saw what I thought was a stretch SUV parked on the King's Road one
evening sometime last year. A closer inspection revealed that it was
actually two, the front end of one connected by a wrap around shell, of
the same colour and painted to look like a stretch vehicle, to the rear
end of the other. I think it was a promotional stunt for either a
restaurant or club opening.

If it's not UK registered, then I don't think it's exempt, but it's more a
case of not being able to enforce it.

But since it probably seats more than 9 people, it'd be exempt anyway.

And Georgian.

Though you'll probably find it was a made up plate perhaps for a film
shoot.
No one is going to import a car like that into the country for their
own
personal use for the short period they can get away without having a UK

plate. I've seen a couple these stretched SUVs about , one was a Hummer
and the other was a Ford Excursion. Both of them utterly tasteless and
full
of chavs on their way to a nightclub.

Then the SUV was presumably not pulled over for the same reason
that cars that speed past speed cameras are not pulled over.

How exactly is a speed camera going to arrest someone for unreadable number
plates?

I think it falls under the group not used for numberplates (which
includes several Indian scripts), BICBW.

An American term, Sports Utility Vehicle.

Sports Utility Vehicle, an American term. It roughly translates into
English as 4x4.

I believe that it is has a legal definition in the USA as SUVs pay less
tax (of some sort or another) because they are used by people who have
to go off road road (farmers etc) and so are sort of 'tools of the trade'.

Just like every Range Rover here is used by the laird for traveling the
estate (the gamekeeper having a Land Rover of course).

Stephen

I had the joy of watching a stre-e-e-e-e-e-e-etched Hummer H2 dealing with
Hemel's magic roundabout yesterday morning. Hilarious.

You are right. Hebrew script is not used on numberplates. Our plates here
are NN-NNN-NN (except for some old ones that are NNN-NNN or NN-NNN) where
the final group of 2 digits is now an importer suffix.
The SUV was probably a Federation Diplomatic vehicle from the Klingon
Embassy.

Same way that they arrest people for dangerous driving. You dont need
traffic police in this day and age, just a few cameras and a call centre
in Coventry.
