Can anyone suggst the best times, routes, stations etc to catch the
remaining slam-door stock still used by SWT, Southern and SET on the
former BR (Souhern Region) lines?

SWT diagrams are becoming thinner by the week. The Windsor lines became
Desiro-worked at the beginning of December but several of the
Portsmouth/Haslemere diagrams remain CIG/VEP. I haven't got an up-to-date
list of current diagrams but, at the beginning of the year, the following
diagrams *out* of Waterloo were slam-door: 2P07 05:20 Portsmouth &
Southsea; 2F03 05:50 Woking; 2W13 06:12 Wareham; 2T13 06:42 Portsmouth
Harbour; 1P17 08:00 Portsmouth Harbour; 1T17 08:09 Eastleigh & PH; 1P19

09:30 PH; 2L23 09:42 Basingstoke; 2P25 10:15 Haslemere; 1P27 10:30 PH;

Several of the above diagrams have probably been lost during Jan/Feb.

South Central diagrams are similarly thinning out as the East Grinstead
diagrams go over to Electrostars, the best time to view SC slam-door stock
is from about 16:00 at London Bridge.

South Eastern Trains diagrams are concentrated on the peak hours now. Again,
from about 16:00 London Bridge comes alive with slammers.

railway locomotives and rolling stock in order to provide a desired
service" [New Oxford Dictionary of English, 2001]


There's a simple example of a service that uses 4 trains at

The term is often used nowadays (as in Jack Taylor's post) to refer to
the set of journeys allocated to a single train formation over the
course of, typically, one day.

On Southern nearly all services are now 377s. I haven't seen slammers going
towards Lewes/Eastbourne, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. The
exceptions I know of a

0631/ Hove/
0640 Brighton to London Bridge
0711 Hove to Victoria
0741 Hove to Victoria

1724 Victoria to Littlehampton/Southampton

There are probably still one or two Horsham via Redhill services that are
slammers as well.

Can't be specific, but you still see a good few passing through East Croydon
in the morning peaks.

I don't know if the 17.49 weekdays Victoria - Ramsgate still has Ceps
(they certainly worked it well into January), but if it does that's the
one to go for !
