Libeskind takes metaphors from fractal mathematics, crystalline
geology and so on, and realises them with zigzags, skewed spaces
and narrow slashes of glazing and industrial materials - even
though the most intense experience its users will ever confront
will be someone's failure to top up the coffee machine.

Heh! Actually, to be honest, on the day in question my gout-y right foot was
playing up a bit. None of us are getting any younger and at almost 55, I'm
beginning to get aches in places where I didn't even know I had places.

That'll teach you to pass the port to the left...

I refer the Honourable Member for 'Ackney East to the following:

"Pass the port ... it won't give you gout

James Meikle
Friday April 16, 2004
The Guardian

"Researchers have cheering news for grumpy old port drinkers. Beer drinkers
are far more likely to develop gout than those who quaff wine."

Indeed.. But the grumpy old port drinker in his plus-fours with his
bandaged foot and shooting stick is an enduring image of the English
upper class,
Doncha know, what?

Moreover, would you, a 55-year-old man, *really* remain seated while a
mother with a young child in her arms was standing?????

The squealing, emaciated, ear-ringed brat was not in her arms, it was in the
wretched buggy.

Yes, but had she had to fold the buggy, she would have had to stand with
the child in her arms. I wonder whether you would have still been
reluctant to give up your seat for her?

You mean that you agree that any mother who takes her child on a bus is
automatically a prostitute and/or dole fiddler, with the child born out
of wedlock? Which is what Ian is *saying*, even if it isn't what he
*means*! And it is that to which I take exception.

Utter twaddle. Is this correct: "A cow is an animal, therefore all animals
are cows"? No? Well, that's what *you're* saying!

Hmmm. You wrote:

"That doesn't alter the fact that I, a 55 year-old, am expected to jump
up and hand over my seat the minute some 17 year-old chav slapper gets
on the bus with a buggy the size of Peckham!"

Which implies that your sole experience with buggy-wielding mothers is
that of "17 year-old chav slappers", a phrase to which I have several
times objected.

I think you are wrong to pre-judge people by their accents.

Feel free to point out where I pre-judge? The fact remains that in this
country, you can usually tell someone's social status by their accent -
which implies absolutely nothing about how much pleasure or otherwise
you might derive from their company!

Frankly, given your bias against young mothers, I'm surprised you
appreciate that many people have children, not just "chav slappers", as
you refer to the bus-using classes!

You are not only narrow minded but selective in what and where you
read. I have never made the comments you attribute to me and I look
forward to an apology, if you can come down to my level to give it.

Yes, it was Ian who referred to young mothers as "chav slappers" (and if
that's not narrow-minded, I don't know what is!). You, on the other
hand, merely wrote:

"They are masters of their own fate. If they can't fold a push chair
then walk, if they can't walk then keep your knees together and you
won't have the trouble of push chairs and kids annoying real passengers
who need to get from A to B. Lets not forget that these women have all
day to do their shopping or what ever it is they do."

Am I to assume that women who can't "keep their knees together", and who
are not "real passengers", but spend their days "shopping, or whatever
it is they do" are, in your view, delightful, educated, charming young
women? Because they sound a great deal more like Ian's "Chav Slappers"
to me!

terestingly, Mrs. Redboots (Annabel) lives about two miles from me, so we
have pretty much the same things to contend with. I can only put her
twisting of my words and/or misunderstanding of my reasoning down to the
typically blinkered approach to life that the new-agers have - everybody
must love everyone else, all life is beautiful, smile, big hugggggggs, and
we'll all live happily ever after.

Do feel free to explain how you come to class me as a "New Ager"? Or
since when love was either (a) voluntary or (b) anything to do with
smiles and hugs? Surely tolerance for one's fellow-beings, whether on a
bus or anywhere else, is rather more to the point?
