Default Ticket inspections on the Tube

Are there ever any ticket inspections on the London Underground? Yes,
there are barriers at all stations but I would have thought that LUL
would also have roving patrols of inspectors randomly checking tickets
on board tube trains to catch any fare dodgers?

They do, often accompanied by coppers.

Yes - sometimes in uniform, sometimes plain clothes. Not always at the
gates either - often on interchange routes or on train. There are
occasional big checks with the police and drug dogs too. We had a spate
of those at Walthamstow earlier this year.

Oh, no there aren't.

See, for example, Finchley Central. Or many other stations in the outer
reaches of the lines, which either have now barriers, or the barriers
are often left open.

Yes. They were at Kings Cross today (H&C/Circle/Met) outside the
barriers.

I can't quite understand what they were checking though, as everyone
they stopped had already gone through the exit barrier with their
Oyster - and they were asking to scan them. They didn't seem to care
about those, like me, with paper tickets.

What were they hoping to find/discover? No police with them, but there
are police (Community Support for BTP) nearby I suppose.

I've worked in London for several years and only ever come across one roving
patrol which were out at the far end of the Piccadilly Line near Heathrow.

Excuse me, possibly stupid: How far does LU reserve the right to check your
ticket after passing the gates or leaving a bus? Honestly, after I passed
the gates I would have thought I left their area of control.

What would happen if you refused to be checked? If you told them you just
entered from the surface, and were leaving on another exit?

Lived here all my life. Only place ticket has been checked other than at a barrier
is at Green Park in the interchange tunnels. I would guess trying to spot people
with Z2 only tickets travelling through Z1.

Seen them once many years ago on a central line train just before Ealing
Broadway.

Most tubes are probably too overcrowded for the inspectors to move about
in...

Kings Cross station is in too halves. The connecting corridors, while
affording access to the street, are still LU property and therefore it
is legitimate in this case.

What would happen if you refused to be checked? If you told them you just
entered from the surface, and were leaving on another exit?

I agree it would be stretching the jurisdiction of ticket inspectors if
they just stopped you on the pavement outside - unless they were with a
policeman and you had been asked to stop inside LU property and you had
sought to escape.
