I don't often need to use public transport so have no knowledge of tickets.
Could someone please answer the following:

I need to go into Victoria from Wallington on Tuesday returning on Thursday
(both off peak).

1) Can a buy a return ticket or will I need 2 singles?
2) Can I buy the ticket(s) before Tuesday as I will be tight for time?
3) Any idea of cost?
4) Are there ALWAYS plenty of taxi's at Victoria

I assume you mean London Victoria!?

2 singles. You cannot buy a return for longer than 1 day in most of what
used to be Network Southeast.

2) Can I buy the ticket(s) before Tuesday as I will be tight for time?

Shouldn't be a problem.

£4.10 single.

It depends. There always seems to be lots but I have seen long queues of
people waiting for taxis at the very busiest times. It is one of the
main London ranks so I wouldn't worry.

Yes. The staff at Wallington station are always happy to sell advance
dated tickets [1], and I often buy tickets there for future travel.
After 16:00 you can also buy tickets for travel the next day from the
machine.

3) Any idea of cost?

GBP 4.10 off peak

4) Are there ALWAYS plenty of taxi's at Victoria

Pass.

Only within Greater London I think. I don't have a problem buying Saver
Returns with my Network Card from Cambridge.

Hmm. I tried to buy a Saver return from Newbury to London Paddington a
couple of weeks back to be told the only tickets on offer for that
journey were a single, a day return or a Network AwayBreak. I consider
myself an informed punter but even I was left confused by this. God
alone knows how the average "customer" makes sense of the system...

It used to be a much wider area than Greater London when I had a close
involvement in all things ticketing. Cambridge always had return tickets
valid for longer than one day. I imagine it has all changed and the
"rules" are now impenetrable.

Network Awaybreaks are still sold for some journeys by some TOCs. WAGN
scrapped them for Cambridge-London last year. The main difference is
that they only allow return within 5 days compared to a month for Savers.

Indeed, which is why a NAB was no good to me - I had no intention of
returning to Newbury within five days...

In general, "period" returns are only available for journeys over 50
miles. Similarly, "day" returns are generally only available for

You are confused. The situation is in flux and no such simple rule
obtains.
Day returns and CDRs were available for all distances, and eg,
London/Bournemouth (90 miles) is still available.
The wish of GNER to disappear all discounted returns and replace them
by prebooked singles means that walk on day trips London/York,
London/Edinburgh and so forth require a Saver Return minimum.

For returns valid for longer than one day SWT's leaflet, apparently
already obsolete since their Saver Returns have been withdrawn, says
Network Awaybreak Returns are available "on selected journeys over 35
miles" and Saver Returns "on selected journeys over 50 miles" and Open
Returns "on selected longer distance routes".
