The job was to give the customer what they asked for, not to question
it. The former could never get you into trouble; the latter, whilst more
helpful, could.

I'm not saying that's right, just saying how it was (and probably still
is).

So in what sense is, say, Coniston Water not a lake? Is it just that it
doesn't have 'lake' in the name, or is it geologically different soehow?

And what about Lake Windermere?

Of course, and I've done it myself many a time too. It just slightly
amazes me that a regular commuter would do anything but walk (or in
Bill's example continue on the train to Cannon Street).

Many people simply don't like walking, including many train staff!
We had plenty of turns that involved working into one London terminal,
making your own way to another and working from there. The TCS kept a
stock of Underground tickets for the purpose. When I declined one saying
that it was just as quick to walk (for example) from Cannon Street to
Blackfriars or Charing Cross to Holborn Viaduct they were astonished!

Given that people haven't changed, if anything they're more stroppy than
they used to be, simply complying with the customer's request is surely all
that's wanted? As we all know, the customer is always right, isn't s/he?

Which one? Canberra, Tasmania, Illinois, North Carolina or Tennessee?

So true.

Travelled from Dartford to Stoneleigh on Weds pre-09:30. Checked the
(new) price of a peak all-zone travelcard, then toddled to the ticket
office which remarkably had no queue AND all three windows open, to
check the price of a day return, since the *?|***!!?? SE Trains ticket
machines have so few destinations in them. Clerk told me price, I said
"oh, all-zone travelcard is cheaper, I'll have one please" and he was so
surprised he had to check on his little map that Stoneleigh was in the
zonal system. And was even more surprised to find it is.

I really, really pity the non-anoraks who don't understand the system.
They must consistently overpay. Sigh.

Under the fare structure we had at the time, the former was considerably
more expensive.

Did anyone bother to tell those commuters? My experience is that no ticket
clerk will ever suggest a cheaper alternative route or indeed inform the
traveller of the best route option. Hence when taking the train from Essex
to Manchester the ticket office would always try to route me via London
Euston. I had to point out to them that there was a direct service which
was actually cheaper, and faster.

Things haven't changed, no one working for SWT will point out that it's
cheaper to get to my home from London if one uses the Portsmouth train,
rather than the Southampton train. And they certainly won't advise anyone
of the closest station, preferring to direct people to Winchester.

The fact that we have been discussing the Lake District clearly escaped
your notice. Pay attention, lad!

Pay attention yourself, sonny. There is no such thing as "Lake
Windermere" in the Lake District, though there are five of them
elsewhere, hence my query.

I'm 56.

There are so many websites that refer to it as "Lake Windermere" that I
must have got confused. Apologies, but I'm not very good at pedantry.

I can think of four: Edgware Road, TCR and the south side of
Marylebone and Euston Roads.

Good guess, but maps suggest the answer is one, TCR.
