The reasons why the London Underground was never extended to Bushey

The chavs?

will be discussed at the next lecture at Bushey Museum this week, as
the history of the tube is dissected. The talk will take place on
Tuesday , starting at 8pm, and will be held in the Bushey Centre, in
Bushey High Street.

Was the plan the Bakerloo (later Jubille) to Watford Junction via
Stanmore?

No. The Northern line was going to be extended beyond Edgware, to
Brockley Hill, Elstree, & Bushey Heath.

Cannot see that ever happening now.

Cannot see that ever happening now.

It was one of several extensions planned in the 1930s, delayed by WW2, and
cancelled afterwards, chiefly because Green Belt legislation meant that the
areas which would have been served would not be intensively developed. Other
examples are the proposed Central Line extension to Denham and the SR
extension from Chessington South to Leatherhead.

How many stops did they plan to have between West Ruislip and Denham?

One, at South Harefield. I believe that some construction work was
started, though not very much.

It's a couple of miles beyond West Ruislip, along the Chiltern line heading
towards Beaconsfield etc. Denham Golf club is currently the only
intermediate stop.

Denham Golf Club is beyond Denham. The tube wouldn't have gone that far even
if teh Denham extension had been built.

For anybody interested in this subject, can I recommend two books?

By Tube Beyond Edgware by Tony Beard (Capital Transport) ISBN
1-85414-246-1
Northern Wastes by Jim Blake and Jonathan James (North London Transport
Society) ISBN 0-3267304-02
