Nice announcement
On the train out of Waterloo last night, an announcement came over the
tannoy : "Ladies and Gentlemen, it has been brought to my attention that there is a beggar on board the train. This is the Guard. If he approaches you for money, please do not give any. Thankyou." |

I got a more generic along the lines "Beggars sometimes operate on this train, please don't give them money" on SWT earlier this week. |

SWT already play way too many of them on every journey, I don't want any more. |

But what irritates me almost more than the number of the announcments is how (1) the train and platform announcements don't co-ordinate and (2) when things aren't working properly (late running and particularly out of order running) the systems don't cope. |

One that irritates me is the one they play on the platform when a train terminates - 'the train now standing, blah blah, all change please' which seems aimed at the occupants of the train, (which probably made sense before train PAs existed). However, the said train is usually just approaching the station, nowhere near the platform, and a similar announcement is also taking place on board just a bit too early, or they are announcing the outgoing service already... The one that ****es me off is that the recorded announcements of "this is Putney. The next station is Wandsworth Town" are usually wrong. They're either a stop or two out, or they think the train is travelling in the opposite direction. Not very helpful when you're buried in a good book and want to know when to get off the bloody train. This even happens on those trains where the trainco has been stupid enough to try to tie the doors in to GPS so that they can't open if the driver stops a yard or two away from the end of the platform. -- David Cantrell | London Perl Mongers Deputy Chief Heretic While researching this email, I was forced to carry out some investigative work which unfortunately involved a bucket of puppies and a belt sander -- after JoeB, in the Monastery |

This is due to a train on the track" Tim. |

That's why they tell you to mind the gap between the platform and the train. |

And the reverse of announcing on the train "this is the train to X calling at Y and Z" which is obviously aimed at making sure joining pax are getting on the correct train, announced before the doors are opened. tim |

Was on a slow train out of Waterloo yesterday to Ashford (is it Surrey or Middlesex, SWT can't seem to make up their mind) ... the announcements certainly had verbal diarrhea ... the problem being that they are really loud, so quitely listening to my iPod I have to turn up to drown out the announcements. As soon as they stopped people got on at Clapham Junction using their phones quite loudly .. (googles for "mobile phone signal jammers") ... |

Paul All change your plans please, as you hadn't previously been told this train was terminating? I'm also starting to get irritated by the new automatic platform announcements on the Northern line(1) - she's just much too cheerful on a Monday morning, and do we really need to constantly be reminded to stand behind the yellow line(2)? gw (1) I think on some other lines too, but I've had the dubious pleasure of only using the Northern recently.. (2) the Circle line? |

Obviously from the number of people I see stood right on the edge of the platforms in a typical shift. I've hit a couple of 'em too :( -- Steve Fitzgerald has now left the building. I haven't heard the ones on the Northern, but I wonder if they're in the same tone as the extremely patronising ones at Finchley Road? They sound as if the announcer is speaking to a small child. They also contain lots of redundant information (like the next stop for each train on each line in both directions, even though it's only relevant for one line in one direction, and then only at peak times). Combined with the high frequency of the service, and the fact that each train is announced multiple times, they end up nattering away almost constantly. Argh! |
