there's never been a bridge there before. I think what it might have been like when the line went in over Ludgate Hill between Blackfriars There are pictures of that bridge around online, I saw them once but I can't remember the site. diverted under the road into City Thameslink station (which confusingly on opening was also named St Paul's - well, St Paul's Thameslink, to be precise). Personally i think "St Pauls Thameslink" is a much better name since it locates the station precisely. City Thameslink on the other hand is pretty vague and could mean anywhere from Holborn to Aldgate. B2003 |

All the other "Something Thameslink" stations are within interchangable distance of the other stations of the same name. City Thameslink on the other hand is pretty vague and could mean anywhere from Holborn to Aldgate. Well yes - but the name should be something specific to locate it *and* not be a name already taken. |

I well remember the old bridge - my comments were just referring to what it would have been like when the bridge *first* went up and it seems to be is generally agreed spoilt a fine view up the hill of St. Paul's. The new bridge at Shoreditch just led me to be reminded of this - but as far as I can think of the new bridge doesn't obscure the any (equally) 'classic' London views, though it will obstruct the sight lines of some more modern City buildings (perhaps the iconic Gherkin in particular). diverted under the road into City Thameslink station (which confusingly on opening was also named St Paul's - well, St Paul's Thameslink, to be precise). Yes, in isolation it's certainly a good name, but I think it originally confused people into thinking there was easy interchange with the Central line at St Paul's station when there isn't. Though the Central line station isn't really that far away when you use the northern exit of the Thameslink station. |

When first buit the line was known as the 'City extension', and trains were split into 'City' and 'West End' (Victoria) portions. Long after through passenger services cesed the indicators on platforms 1 and 2 at Herne Hill would show 'Victoria' or 'City', and the indicators weren't that old. The 'City' glasses were later replaced by ones which said Blackfriers & Holborn Viaduct, though I think the latter may have been abbreviated in some way, I can't remember now. I think the 'City' displays lasted until about the early '70s. |

... TfL are so pleased with their 'new train set' they have set up a webcam to cover the ELL bridge installation at Shoreditch High St. Accessible via middle of: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ Is this just a one off or will they maintain the webcam? Are there any other webcams of ELLX? I haven't seen a track schematic, but it appears that the ELLX's route in that are will be on a rather tight loop; Going north, it will cross the new bridge, go via the old Broad Street and then the cross the bridge in Hoxton, right? |

The site is overlooked by a building full of web agencies (where they've put the cam), so it would have been very easy to arrange this one. Yes. You'll find a map I made in the January archives on my site. I didn't get there until 8:30am and the bridge was already only two feet above where it was going, and touched down by 9am. It is a tight bend, I believe it is one of the main reasons the whole section through from Shoreditch (ex LU station site) to Dalston is being installed as slab track using noise reduction measures. Might help explain the extended timescales and high costs for the installation I guess... Paul S |

The thing buffers up and then I just get a small blank screen. At first I thought the system might have not been working but it's still like it today. My computer is relatively new and I wonder if I'm missing an all-important plug-in or something. I've had the same experience this weekend until a few minutes ago, when I went to the TfL site once more. At first I got the small blank screen like you, but as I scrolled around the page I noticed that the video had burst into life. However, it's NOT A LIVE FEED. It's a repeating short clip of about 30 seconds taken apparently from the cabin of one of the cranes, i.e. very high up, above the bridge, which itself is still suspended above its resting place. You can't actually see the latter, as the camera never pans down far enough. Otherwise it pans around rather too fast and with too narrow a view. -- Richard J.
