quote Imperial Wharf Work to build a brand new station in the south of Fulham could start as early as June 2008 after a multi-million funding package to pay for it looks likely to be agreed. If Hammersmith & Fulham Council agrees the multi-million funding package it will mean that Imperial Wharf Overground Station, which has been talked about for nearly twenty years, can finally be built. An H&F Council spokesman said: "It has been a long road to get here but after 15 years there is finally light at the end of the tunnel for Imperial Wharf Overground Station. "Thanks to the collaboration of Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea councils we are nearly at the stage when construction can begin. We promised to work tirelessly to deliver this station and, if cabinet agrees this funding package, our construction partners can get on and start building this important station." The new station, on the west London line, will be built by Imperial Wharf developers St George and the news will come as a boon to local people trapped in one of west London's most notorious transport dead ends. The area scores just two, out of six, in official 'transport accessibility' surveys and recent developments like Imperial Wharf, Chelsea Harbour and Lots Road Power Station are only adding to the number of people commuting to and from the area on a regular basis. The council spokesman continues: "Without Imperial Wharf Overground Station the full development potential of the south of the borough is unlikely to be realised. More car traffic would be created adding to local congestion and pollution and those without cars would struggle to get around easily." If H&F Council's cabinet agrees the funding package, at a meeting on April 28, the station will be built just north of the West London Line railway bridge over the River Thames. The station will allow residents much easier access to the Underground at West Brompton and the myriad of rail services at Clapham Junction. The council spokesman concluded: "We aim to create a Borough of Opportunity in Hammersmith & Fulham and great transport links are vital in helping us to achieve this. "If cabinet agrees the funding package, Imperial Wharf Overground will be back on track. The next step will be to continue our hardwork with St George, Transport for London (TfL), Network Rail, neighbouring boroughs and other partners to get this station up and running as soon as possible." Rail experts predict that the station should now be open in 2010 unquote Couple of questions: Does the opening of the new WLL stations at Shepherd's Bush and Imperial Wharf have implications for freight paths along the WLL - Does it bring forward say the electrification of the Hounslow Loop to the North London Line at Acton? How long will the NLL/WLL trains be? Catching the train on Match days during the run up to the Christmas Shopping Season could be fun. Do the plans feature narrow platforms obstructed by lamposts - has somebody checked - if so who? |

IIRC this is one of the reasons the WLL trains seem so slow already. Not sure if the eventual improved WLL service of 4 tph, and the 2 tph Southern (proposed in the SL RUS) will fit easily though. Does it bring forward say the electrification of the Hounslow Loop to the North London Line at Acton? Is there significant amounts of electric hauled freight at all? I'd be surprised if there was enough to justify the link you suggest, and suspect there might be similar difficulties with pathing freight to/from SE London round that way anyway, as it would still have to get through Clapham Junction somehow. How long will the NLL/WLL trains be? Catching the train on Match days during the run up to the Christmas Shopping Season could be fun. 4 car depending on how soon the various top-up orders for additional cars and whole trains are delivered. There was a recent story that the new dual voltage Electrostars for Southern/FCC/Thameslink may have been prioritised over some of the TfL order though. Platform lengths [such as at Willesden Junction] prevent longer NLL/WLL trains. It is possible the Southern WJ service could be lengthened, presume there could be an issue over West Brompton though - is it 6 or 8 car long? However - the new cars are declared to hold an amazing 667 people as against the equally amazing 500 in the existing, as reported to the ORR he http://www.rail-reg.gov.uk/upload/pd..._appendix7.pdf Do the plans feature narrow platforms obstructed by lamposts - has somebody checked - if so who? Good point - it will be important to get the engineering drawings on line soon, so that a 'newsgroup design review' can take place - clearly a cost saving procedure too. Perhaps Imperial Wharf will be a quickly built modular station. Obviously it will need a very high footbridge to allow pax to overlook Chelsea Harbour properties... Can only be short time before TfL pronounce its arrival on the tube map for the first time - except it was already on the maps in 2005 when it was originally planned to open... Paul S |

But unlike the NLL the West London Line never featured on the Tube map prior to the TfL takeover. Has pressure from TfL or the Mayor played any part in these developments, or has it just been the hard slog of LB Hammersmith & Fulham, assisted by LB Kensington & Chelsea, that has led to this new station finally getting the go-ahead? |

We can't possibly discuss this - it might affect the election... !! Paul |

Me wonders how Mwmbwls might have phrased it... |
