A proposal has been made to change the name of a revamped station due
to open in the East End in two years time.

Shoreditch High Street station will open as part of the East London
Line.

Tower Hamlets councillor Abdal Ullah said the new station should be
called "Banglatown" to reflect the strong Bangladeshi community.

I see no reason why station names should not reflect current social trends
or political figures.

We've already got Golda's Green - a tribute to former Israeli premier Golda
Meir.

There must be an appropriate "Heath" that could be modified to acknowledge
the late Sir Edward of that name, though I can't think of a suitable current
station name than easily be amended to
"That-****-Brown-promoted-beyond-his-abilities."

Unlikely, since:

1) Since Galloway got in in Bethnal & Bow, he's done almost exactly
****-all not only for the constituency, including the Bangla
community;

2) the shopkeepers who want their area to be represented on the Tube
map to attract more tourists and the extremists who want to destroy
Western Society are not the same people, despite sharing a skin
colour.

The only extremists who will benefit from this are the BNP. I don't
think even Galloway is reckless enough to support something like this,
even if he agreed with it.

I note that Abdal Ullah is a New Labour concillor for a different ward
(St Dunstans and Stepney Green).

The relevant council ward is actually now called "Spitalfields and
Banglatown", but council ward names are notoriously inappropriate in a
number of areas.

How about the station is called Shoreditch High Street and they have
little signs underneath saying for Banglatown. Seems a straightforward
compromise.

As for earlier suggestion that Tower Hamlets is a sewer, this is way
off, its got some superb streets like Folgate St and Hanbury St, full
of lovely Georgian houses, and nearby Hawksmoors Christ Church
Spitalfields. Not what Id call a dump.

The current plan is "Shoreditch High Street" with the subtitle "For
Brick Lane". This may even be part of the planning permission - I
can't find a reference right now.

If it matters, the entrance will be on Wheler Street around halfway
between Shoreditch High Street and Brick Lane. It'll be on the west
side of the street, so facing east towards Brick Lane. It'll also be
surrounded by skyscrapers in the near future, which would make the
name "Banglatown" very out of place.

I wasn't talking about the people who want the sign changed , they're
just idiots. But any chance he can get to be anti establishment he'll
take so I'd be surprised if he didn't pop up at some point.

Well I did say there exceptions. But generally the borough is a vile
mix of grotty council estates and run down terraces. A few years back
I had the misfortune of having to walk through part of it from
Limehouse when the DLR packed up.
