AFAIK Epping Forest Council subsidises the frequent service.
Obviously the cheques for the Ongar branch subsidy got lost in the
post then.

I think the branch closed before the current subsidy scheme was
agreed.

So it wasn't subsidised then?

Until the late 1990s the line east of Loughton was all out of
boundary and not included on the standard travelcard.

I think you mean north of loughton.

The Central Line runs Westbound-Eastbound, there is no North! :-)

Yes , it does seem that LUL live in a 2D universe where incidentaly
time runs slower and minutes are 80 seconds long

gurgled happily, sounding much like they were
saying:

Just been reading on Wikipedia that Amersham might be going down to
having just two trains an hour? Is that not a really poor service?

Not really, because you can use the Chiltern Service. The last time I
was on an Amersham train during the day, it wasn't very full.

Out of interest how much does a single from Amersham to Zone 1 cost?

£5.50 daytime Oyster, £8.20 off-peak ODTC, £15 peak ODTC.

Wow and I thought Zone 6 was expensive.

Hah. You want to see the National Rail fares for places a similar radius
out which aren't lucky enough to be on tube fares...

FFS, _parking_ at Watford Junction's £7...

The Chiltern service is only 1tph on Sundays. Perhaps this change
should be combined with an increase to 2tph.

What is there around Epsom Downs that's covered by TfL?

The station (and Banstead) is in zone 6 for Travelcards. (Belmont is in
London and has just the one train an hour) Also no trains on Sundays.

Buses, IIRC.

Not many of those. However, though outside Gtr London, the station is in
the TfL-defined zone 6, as is the nearby(ish) Tattenham Corner. Belmont
station is on the Epsom Downs line and is in TfL territory.

Despite covering prime commuter territory, the Epsom Downs line is not
popular, perhaps because its trains take the long route via West Croydon.
The line was singled in the 80s when its signal box burned down, limiting
the capacity (though it could manage a half-hourly service if it tried).

In its heyday it had a dozen or so platforms - mainly used only on race
days.
