Does anyone know if they are running a normal service tomorrow on the tube?

It's a Saturday service tomorrow, with the W&C line service operating
to weekday first and last train times. Not running a full weekday
service makes sense given that a significant number of commuters won't
be back at work until Monday.

See the PDF of the festive period booklet here (which will likely
vanish of the web by Saturday), specifically page 33 / PDF page 38:
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/10353.aspx

Normal weekday fares will apply, and the Congestion Charge is back in
force too.

There's still a little bit of time to hurry along to a Tube station
and buy a period Travelcard at 2008 prices, but you'd have to be quick!

The other big deal about 2nd January 2009 is that the Elderly Freedom Pass
acquires 24-hour validity on TfL services - or, at least, that's what their
website appears to say:
http://www.freedompass.org/important.htm

Absolutely correct - it will be valid at any time of the day on London
Buses, the Underground, the DLR, London Overground, and Croydon
Tramlink.

It's important to emphasise that Freedom Passes will *not* be valid on
National Rail services before 09:30 on weekdays - i.e. nothing has
changed in that regard - though to slightly muddy the waters Freedom
Passes will be accepted on National Rail routes where there is
ticketing interavailability with London Underground, such as Stratford
to Liverpool Street or Finsbury Park to Moorgate.

This (shortly to be out-of-date) map shows the NR lines in *orange*
where Freedom Passes will be accepted at any time - those lines in
*red* will continue to only accept Freedom Passes after 09:30 on
weekdays:
http://www.freedompass.org/documents...edomPassv3.pdf

It's also worth noting that the validity of English National Bus
Passes (i.e. those issued outside of London) on London Buses will be
the same as before, i.e. they are only valid between 09:30 and 23:00
on weekdays. This obviously should be borne in mind when planning
trips with visiting friends etc.

In trying to clarify things I realise I've been somewhat less than
crystal clear myself! What I meant was that, when it comes to National
Rail, Freedom Passes will be valid at any time on a *strictly limited
number* of National Rail routes - specifically those that have
ticketing interavailability with LU - otherwise they will only be
valid after 09:30 on weekdays.

As a commuter, I hope this new privilege isn't too widely used.

What additional capacity is being added to the network to handle this
demand?

I expect it won't be. Why would someone with the whole day available
to them choose to travel in such unpleasant conditions unless they
really needed to? (And if they do really need to now, they'll likely
travel and pay the fare).

Given that Freedom passes are available from the age of 60, but many
people continue to work to at least 65, there will be a fair number of
Freedom Pass users that travel in peak hours, but this does not
necessarily indicate that the numbers will suddenly rise just because it
has become free to do so.

Not in the morning peak hours for Freedom Pass holders. (yet)
