Are there any left in London?

AFAIK the one in Northwick Park is still the a sign forbids the public
from using it, but that didn't stop me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paterno...ed_Kingdomsays there's also
one in Viscount House, a private BA building at Heathrow.

what happens if you don't get off at the top (or indeed, bottom)
floor?

You find yourself moving sideways for a few moments and then you start
going down again, using the other shaft.

Nobody knows.

Seriously. People have tried going 'over the top', or sending cameras
through or whatever, but nothing ever comes back.

Although on occasion, there are times when nothing goes over, but
*something* comes down ...

Yep. Quick, efficient, and absolutely terrifying.

Are there any left in London?

According to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paterno...United_Kingdom

Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow
Viscount House building, Heathrow Airport

But it sounds like neither are open to the public.

What are the odds they are still in widespread use all over mainland Europe,
but considered totally unsafe here...

Well, I came back, and the right way up at that. And, as Max Bygraves
used to say, to prove it I'm here.

This was at CAV in Acton in the 60s.

As others have said, you go over the top and down the other side. I did
it at Birmingham Dental hospital many years ago.

It is odd that I associate paternosters with hospitals, probably
because I saw them in an episode of Columbo once. Yet their biggest
flaw is that they are unsuitable for people in wheelchairs. That's why
they ain't makin em any more.

Are there any Archimedes screw-type lifts left?

What were those

The glass lift at the Apple store, on Regent Street is interesting.
