The junction is perhaps 250 metres south of NX Gate station - not far.

They should be able to leave together if the Southern is crossing to
the fast track (although they can serve NXG on the fast tracks
anyway), but then it couldn't be serving Brockley.

There don't seem to be any trains booked to call at New Cross Gate and then
run fast to Norwood Junction or the Croydon stations - so any train from
either platform is going to stop at Brockley, Honor Oak Park and Forest
Hill.

I didn't check, but there used to be some that did NXG and then non-
stop to Norwood Junction or East Croydon.

It's surprising really; you'd think there would be much more call for
it now. Another place where one can't change from the ELL to fast
trains.

I also can't see any reason why it can't be done. Even if some
Caterhams are on the fast track, they can still stop at NXG.

The standard service is that the Caterhams call at all stations, while the
Tattenham Corners are fast from London Bridge to Norwood Junction. In the
peaks the trains are fast from London Bridge to Norwood Junction, and split
at Purley into Caterham and Tattenham Corner portions. The GBRTT isn't
clear - table 181 suggests that the Caterhams call at New Cross Gate then
Norwood Junction, but 178 shows the intermediate stations.

It seems one such morning service is being restored (but only to East
Croydon, not Norwood Jn) - see:

Missing link restored – New Cross Gate to East Croydon
Date: 10 Jun 2010

In response to passenger requests, a minor change has been made to the
timetable to restore a missing link between New Cross Gate and East
Croydon in the weekday morning peak period.

The 0733 London Bridge to Brighton service now calls additionally at
New Cross Gate at 0738 and arrives at East Croydon at 0748. This train
replaced the 0728 London Bridge to Tonbridge train when the new summer
timetable was introduced in May.

Please note that this train will depart from Platform 3 (middle
platforms) at New Cross Gate.
---/quote---

Under the old timetable, I think the 0728 mentioned above did call at
Norwood Jn, and I think there may have been an even earlier train that
did the same too.

If your first journey starts after 09:30 the off-peak cap applies,

Yes. See my (possibly over-comprehensive?) answer.

Sorry. I posted my comment before seeing your much more comprehensive
reply to the OP.
