Default Cash fare from Charing Cross to Richmond

Looking at the cash fare options in London it seems to be very
complicated. Have I got the following correct.

If I want to travel from Charing Cross to Richmond there are 3
different prices.

1. Charing Cross to Waterloo and on to Richmond. All on National
Rail Cash fare Anytime single £3.70

2. Same journey but underground to embankment and then district to
Richmond. Cash fare underground only Zones 1-4 £4.00

3. Same journey again but underground to waterloo then train to
Richmond Cash fare underground and national rail £5.60

Am I correct. It seems very complicated for such a simple journey. I
know oyster would be better but sometimes you only want to make single
journey.

The NR and NR + tube options make more sense if you look at the journey from
the Richmond end. Richmond to London Terminals would cover you to Waterloo
or on to Charing Cross by rail. *But going across the river on the tube is a
fare to London Terminals plus an onward fare to a Z1 station. *AIUI that has
been the case for a long while, *and isn't in itself a recent change?

Things did change a few years ago (maybe five years ago) when
comprehensive 'through fares' aka NR+TfL cash/paper fares were
introduced for journeys wholly within the London zones.

In days of yore you could get a Putney to U1 ticket for the journey
you describe - Putney to Waterloo by rail, then onwards to zone 1 by
Tube. But then the new 'through fares' were introduced - these allow
for a single journey by rail or Tube/DLR in the specified zones (and
were advertised as 'the most you'd pay for a single journey across
London when paying by cash' or some such) - so from Richmond, these
would allow for the journey to start on the Tube and continue by rail
at a later point (e.g. from Liverpool Street to Hackney Downs).

At least, that is my understanding - I don't think I ever purchased
such a fare, not least because an NR single fare plus Oyster PAYG for
the subsequent Tube journey was in most cases cheaper than the NR+TfL
cash/printed 'through fare'.

I'm also a little hazy as to what Ux combinations were available
before this change (i.e. more than just U1) - e.g. could one have
purchased a Putney to U1256 ticket for a journey from Putney to
Waterloo, then onwards by Tube from z1 to z6 (say to Upminster)? I
think this was indeed possible, but I don't think I ever did it.
