Does anyone know what's going on in the former Arsenal stadium in this
picture?

Maybe the lawn is being irrigated. If you go close enough it looks
like jets of water coming out.

Oh, but it's not a real lawn, is it?

Artificial 'sun' lighting to keep the grass growing when in the shade of the
stands.

Fairly common nowadays in the big stadia where the all round stands
initially led to the grass surface being absolutely useless for large parts
of the year, and led to re-turfing mid season at quite a few grounds.

Apart from the issue of whether it's grass, wouldn't that blot out all
those shadows?

Thanks. The fact that they are concentrated in the northern half makes
me think not. They also have shadows from the sunlight, so if they are
lights, either they are not switched on or they are faint compared with
the sun.

If they aren't lights, they really do look very like them:

They are definitely artificial lighting. Have a look at this website for
instance:

These things once in the ground will stay for quitre a while between games,
whether they happen to be on or off at the time pictured...

I was getting confused with the Emirates. The out-of-dateness of the
picture fooled me. It's "luxury" apartments now, I think.
