We probably will only need zones 1-2 except for getting to/from heathrow
which is zone 6. I wonder if I buy a voucher prior to Jan.4th for a
visit starting Jan.10th I'll be able to buy at the lower price.

I'm not sure about that but if you can get the voucher before you get to
the UK, there is a 33% discount on prices.

You can get a Visitors Travel Card for Zones 1 - 2 or 1- 6 and they are
full travel cards which will allow you to use National Rail within your
chosen zones.

A Visitor's Travel Card is a completely different product from the
Travel Cards you'd be able to buy once you reach London and you will not
need a Photocard for one whichever zone combination you choose.
