Rail replacement bus gets lost
 

All too often these problems come about because TOC managers fail to
appreciate the complexities involved in providing bus replacement.

On the face of it, it's all too easy to assume that any fool could
drive a bus from say Coventry to Birmingham New St.

But, try doing it via every local station, along the way, you probably
couldn't find a more illogical road route.

Plus, the drivers are also instructed that they must not drop
passengers on the opposite side of the road to the station entrance.
so each station also has to be approached in an appropriate direction.

All too often it's left for drivers to find all this out the hard way.

Several times I've been the one showing them the way and, even then,
with the help of guidance, those buses are big buggers to be turning
around several times in one journey.

TOCs do sometimes have the sense to stop buses on main roads near stations.
I caught one once at Slaithwaite on a Standedge rail replacement service.
The other passenger and I, both going to Greenfield, had to direct the
driver to Greenfield station, though.

and nothing on the cam.* newsgroups, I suggest the four of them arrange
to meet at a pub one day. The good Mrs Perry and Mrs Rosenstiel can have
a jolly good laugh between themselves over a nice drink in the pub,
reminiscing about all their rail mishaps, whilst the two gentleman
arrange to have a duel (fisticuffs, pistols, cutlasses, whatever)
outside in the pub garden...

At least it didn't take its top off by trying to go through a low
railway bridge, as has happened with rail replacement buses in the past.

That happened at Camden Town a few years back, though I thought that was
a regularly scheduled bus then.

IIRC either "off route" returning to the garage and/or failing to keep
between the "aiming" marks on an arched bridge under which other buses
have been passing for many years :-

I don't think the cycle lanes existed at the time of the accident.

Kentish Town West, I believe. A bus would do well to crash into the
Northern Line in Camden Town :-)

Do you mean the North London Line? The Northern Line is under ground there.

There's one somewhere near Harwich, which is very similar to Ely and got
a bus (coach?) bashed about a year ago.
