A non-London-resident child?

Travelling on their own?

Happens all the time. When I was in my teens I would quite often travel
up to London and spend a day wandering around museums. And there's
plenty of people of my parents' generation who don't have credit cards.

Contactless cards don't have to be credit cards though. My debit card is
contactless, my credit card isn't. That makes sense as I am not likely
to us my credit card, offline, for sub £20 transactions.

I suppose the next question is are contactless debit cards only given to
a sub-set of customers, maybe with a pre-authorised overdraft?

My understanding is is yes (to a subset).

Cards issued to children generally require that transactions be done
online, as the circumstances in which a bank can advance credit to a
child are vanishingly rare.

I would assume so. Having an authorised overdraft facility isn't
actually relevant. The ability to contractually accept terms and the
penalties arising from them (such as a higher rate of interest if you
exceed your overdraft limit) is what matters.

Why not? I always use my credit card when I can, rarely my debit
card. It is easier to manage and fraud protection is much better.

The fraud protection offered with cash is pretty good, I find.

Never been given a foreign coin or a counterfeit note in your change?

I've had so many problems with people giving me the change for the wrong
amount, that if I pay with a £20 note I always make a point of telling
them what I'm handing over.
