An Evening Standard victory to rival that of '66
Gotta love the Standard - front page headline today is...
"1,000 Night Buses to Get Fans Home" http://standardonline.newspaperdirect.com/epaper/pageview.aspx?issue=12372014060900000000001001 The online version has the more sober headline... "Extra night buses to get football fans home after England opener against Italy" http://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/9512426.html The Standard is kinda claiming it as a victory after their appeal (on behalf of 'business leaders') to TfL for later transport services, but my recollection is the earlier stuff in the Standard was about later Tube services. 1,000 night buses there may be on Saturday night, but in fact there'd normally be 900 in service - so what TfL are laying on is 100 extras. You never can quite tell with the Standard, but I would be interested to know if this had been part of the TfL buses game plan a while back, or - as the ES suggests - if recent pressure has led to this increase in provision. An aside - the quote purportedly from Boris refers to "95% of Londoners living no more than 400 metres from a bus stop" - but these are night buses we're talking about (...unless the plan is for a later finish to some day bus routes?). A second aside - the Standard is capable of some great stuff - David Cohen's series of investigative reports on London gangs were rightly fêted and provided some genuine insight into murky elements of the metropolis. |
