A spectacular display reported from the 17:56 from Victoria to Dartford.

What would be the likely cause?

Fault in the underfloor equipment, damaged pick up shoe, or even
something trapped between the shoe and the rail.

A missing shoe I would expect or something caught in the shoe gear shorting
out.

I'd hate to be on a train when there was a real emergency.
This evenings Standard reported this with the headline 'Commuters flee
as train bursts in to flames'.
Passengers fled down the platform past the smouldering carriages to
escape and that 8 carriages and an electrical box were damaged during
the blaze. Commuters today - I dispair, but then it could just be over
jelous news reporters.

I saw the reporting on TV where too many ill-informed people were trying to link this latest issue with the entirely different one a few days ago which wasn't even a train fault but a failure of an insulator on the track !!
