Airport operator BAA chief executive Colin Matthews this week
threw his weight behind plans to run Heathrow Express services
through Crossrail’s central London tunnels.

He said he was backing the idea of extending the dedicated
Heathrow services east from their current Paddington terminus
and into the tunnels being constructed for Crossrail, "with
maximum enthusiasm".

The plan was outlined by Network Rail in its London and the
South East route utilisation study late last year.
Network Rail believes this would also remove the need for many
passengers travelling between Heathrow and central London to
change trains at Paddington.

BAA had previously campaigned against calls to dovetail
Heathrow Express with Crossrail. It objected to the
legislation that authorised the line, fearing that the
Department for Transport could take over the Express service.

However, Matthews told a Westminster Energy, Environment &
Transport Forum event last week that BAA now backs the idea.

"The opportunity of Heathrow Express going forward with
Crossrail, to make sure you can get from Heathrow not just to
Paddington but to other destinations in London, is going to be
great," he said.

Having read the 2011 RUS, it does not propose that Heathrow Express
trains would run onto Crossrail. In fact it proposes the opposite, that
Crossrail would replace HEx, running up to 10tph on the Relief Lines to
Heathrow T4 or T5, skip-stopping to reduce journey times.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense. I can definitely see that happening.

Unless Colin Matthews had read the wrong RUS, it sounds as if the
Heathrow "Crossrail" trains will be operated by HAL.

Huh?

Read the article above. It says three times that Heathrow Express will
be extended beyond Paddington.

I'm sure Colin Matthews spent his days as HAL CEO studying the issues of
flat rail crossings near Paddington, train door spacing and ATO systems!

Don't you think he was just trying to reassure Canary Wharf and BA that
they'd get a direct service to T5? I suspect he was content for his
successor's successor to sort out the details of who'd be operating the
direct trains 12 years later.

Surely it's worth having [Stansted] on Oyster, whoever runs the
trains? I think a lot more Londoners would use it if no separate
tickets were required.

Hands up everyone who chooses which airport to fly from based on what
species of train ticket you'll use to get there.
[looks around]
So that's approximately no-one.

As I'm sure you know, I meant more people would choose to travel to
the airport by train, not that more people would choose that airport.

No, I didn't know. It looked to me as if you were saying that they'd
choose Stansted over Heathrow (the only airport you can currently get to
on Oyster) if you could use Oyster to get to Stansted.

My decisions (for myself and travel-agent-dad) on which airport to use
are as much dominated by the public transport options getting there and
back from home, as the price of the flights.

Me too, but that's because I care about how long it takes to get there.
What ticket I'll need is of no import.

Not without rebuilding the junction with the GWML they don't.

Does Oyster not work on the DLR then?

Abbey Wood is the end of the line. (Well, the Crossrail branch.)

Yes, so reversing the HEx2023 there will be easy.

Ok, leaving aside the fact that no such HEx service is going to exist.

Yes they do, and without touching that junction. They'll be using the new
western rail link from T5.

Not unless they brand all the Heathrow Crossrail trains as such after 2023.
