Heathrow to Stansted with no stairs
In article , Roland Perry
writes Then there's the other way of changing platforms without stairs - escalators up and down. Like at City Thameslink. Are there any Circle Line stations that allow a twin-escalator [or lift] change of direction? Westminster springs to mind. Westminster. Sloane Square. Oh, cheating slightly, but Paddington (H&C) has a centre platform, so you can do a west-to-east reversal there. -- Clive D.W. You can't change direction at Sloane Square without using stairs. There is only one escalator on each platform, normally going up. Actually at present, the eastbound platform's escalator is not working, and is in use as fixed stairs (down). -- Richard J. (to e-mail me, swap uk and yon in address) |

writes And if you were lucky you could get an eastbound District that was reversing at Tower Hill or Mansion House. Of course, if you are getting a train that is reversing (at Aldgate, Tower Hill, Mansion House, High St Ken, Edgware Rd; as well as the more obvious termini further out) that is another and rather direct means to change direction... The main sticking point for a Gatwick/Stansted transfer seems to be getting onto/off the Circle from the Gatwick direction. Perhaps Waterloo is the salvation here. Thameslink London Bridge, then Waterloo East, Jubilee, Westminster, Circle. Does anyone know if the direct link from Waterloo East to Southwark is stair-less, or will it require going via the main station concourse? [You can do Thameslink to Jubilee at London Bridge without stairs, but it's a very long trek]. -- Roland Perry |

Of course, if you are getting a train that is reversing (at Aldgate, Tower Hill, Mansion House, High St Ken, Edgware Rd; as well as the more obvious termini further out) I've restricted this present sub-thread to the Circle, ignoring stations like Royal Oak and Gunnersbury. that is another and rather direct means to change direction... Oh, indeed. Unless the train is going out of service at that point. The main sticking point for a Gatwick/Stansted transfer seems to be getting onto/off the Circle from the Gatwick direction. Perhaps Waterloo is the salvation here. Thameslink London Bridge, then Waterloo East, Jubilee, Westminster, Circle. The latter - there are stairs down from the platforms to the barrier line. -- Clive D.W.
