Sad story on http://tube.tfl.gov.uk/content/press...es/0410/04.asp

...... The court heard that Halpin stopped attending school at 14, had never
had a full-time job, was extremely reticent and who had trouble
communicating with anyone at all.

Both his parents were drug addicts, he said, and though Halpin had played
truant from school for a year, they hadn't even become aware of it. He had
left with no qualifications.

That's why my vehicle's the Piccadilly Line -
It's the size of a county and it comes every two and a half minutes

All well and good, but anybody who is familiar with the juvenile and criminal
courts systems will be more than aware of the incredibly diverse and
increasingly involved litanies which are delivered on the convicted persons
behalf by a stony faced brief or social worker.
My initial feelings of sympathy and even self doubt regarding my very own
humanity have however been diluted somewhat by the sight of crestfallen
convicts giving the thumbs up to family and friends after succeeding in
their attempts to have a lighter sentence imposed by the bench.
Sympathy,Social Consciousness and whatever else is required by society today
can very rapidly be replaced by cynicism and ill regard when one is
constantly requested to accept transferred guilt in order for the actual
transgressor to walk about with nary a blemish on their conscience or
whatever...?

Not for LUL, TfL or the members of the travelling public.

It is sad that he only got 200 hours. At minimum wage that's
equivalent to £820. Not really very much of a pay back for £32 000
damages

It's worse than that. As I read it, the £32K relates only to remedial
work to trains and buses. If they ever get round to cleaning up the
brickwork around the LT network it must amount to very much more than
that.

Agreed. He should be banned from entering London and an area bounded by a
radius of say 30 miles around it - forever. The damage he has done in terms
of fuelling the growth of criminal damage and graffiti is incalculable, and
the psychological effects on the rest of us of his wanton and deliberate
damage means he has forfeited his right to live in this area. A persistent
and cunning menace, his attacks were often well-planned. He needs help and
his upbringing does indeed sound awful, but I just can't manage to have any
sympathy for him, sorry.

Errrrm, I sympathise with your sentiments, but why should anywhere else in
the country have to put up with him? He's your problem, you sort him out.

I'm inclined to agree, but it's not sympathy he needs, it's education and
getting started in the right direction. But will he get it?

That's right, export the problem somewhere else. While you are at it,
export the educationalists and social services types who failed to come
up with a solution for his problems. If they aren't replaced, the same
cycle will repeat, with a new offenders being bred through their broken
system.
