Dancers find Underground appeal

By Dalya Alberge, Arts Correspondent

THE Rambert Dance Company is going down the tube, literally finding a new
platform for its productions. Britain's oldest dance company is staging the
first ballet on the London Underground in an attempt to reach out to the
masses.

Today, 14 costumed dancers will vault ticket barriers, descend the
escalators and pirouette in the main concourse of Canary Wharf station, on
the Jubilee line to Waterloo and in the Eurostar departure lounge.

SNIP part of story

Passengers will encounter six extracts from Constant Speed, a new work set
to vibrant music composed in 1905 by Franz Lehár. The full-length ballet
premieres at Sadler's Wells in London in May.

Ticket sales are expected to reflect the impact of the preview underground
performances. Mr Baldwin said that Lehár's "noisy" music would blare out
from a boom box positioned on the Tube while some of the dancers sit in a
row, doing arm and leg movements, "like a ripple".

The production has been commissioned by Visit London (www.visitlondon.com),
which promotes the capital, in an attempt to take ballet and dance to a new
generation of audiences and to promote performing arts in the city.

Regards,

- Alan (in Brussels, where entertainment on the métro is provided only by
buskers)
