time, rather than letting it go off at some unknown time in the future.

Sometimes the controlled explosion is designed simply to destroy the
detonator and not the explosive itself.

Right. Or they could have blown open the trunk (boot?) of the car
instead of exposing some technician to the risk of triggering a booby
trap. And since the terrorists were using timers, the car could have
had explosives rigged with a timer, so a controlled explosion could
destroyed the timer without risk that it would go off as the police
approached it. And even if it didn't destroy the timer, it could allow
a look at it without the need to get too close.

It's all about reducing risk. Lives are more important than evidence -
particularly when you already have lots of other evidence.

This suggests they should be looking for images of a male about 150 to

Curiously, Hasib Hussain, does not have a baseball cap. The reason I
bring it up is that if you have a guy who is visible on camera, can be
placed with the other bombers, has a police record, blows himself up on
a bus.... and his family reports him missing... that makes it awfully
easy to put the four together. Hell of a coincidence.
