The K3 terminates in Esher High Street, but its only a 10 minute walk
from there to Sandown Park Grandstand (assuming that's where you mean).

direct access to the course from the station at one time.

There still is, but I think it's only on race days.

As Richmond tube and railway station are the same place. I would
suggest using NR Richmond-Clapham Junction then take a train to Esher.

Absolutely the best route.
