Memorize the tube map in three hours!Aug 25 2006
By Tim Stewart

CONFUSED passengers can memorise the entire Tube network in just three
hours - with the help of James Bond, David Beckham and Whitney Houston.

Memory expert Romolo Russo, 43, says readers of his book need never get
lost or even bother carrying a map on the Underground again.
In Memorize The Tube Map In Three Hours, Mr Russo reveals a technique -
used by memory champions - to help passengers learn Harry Beck's iconic
design.
The unmarried dad-of-one, who says he uses the same technique to
memorize a shuffled pack of cards in less than a minute, advises readers
to start by learning the Tube line they ride most.
He attributes a similar-sounding celebrity or otherwise memorable code
word to each station on the line.
Thus Bond Street station becomes James Bond, or Roger Moore; Beckton is
David Beckham and Euston is Whitney Houston.
Similarly, Southwark becomes "shark"; Wimbledon "tennis"; and Regents
Park "zoo".
To learn a line, readers must then imagine a colourful, silly story
linking all the code words in turn.
Mr Russo's sample story for a stretch of the Central line from Notting
Hill Gate to Oxford Circus is: Hugh Grant (Notting Hill Gate) meets the
Queen, who leads the way (Queensway). Burt Lancaster (Lancaster Gate)
directs them to a huge marble arch (Marble Arch). There, they see James
Bond (Bond Street) running towards an ox (Oxford Circus).
Mr Russo, of Bourneville Road, Catford, said: "It is important to learn
mental movies of these bizarre stories, adding as much drama, action
and emotion to them as you can.
"This will help stimulate your memory during recall. Once this has been
achieved, with a little practice you will be able to translate the
parts of the movie into the actual names of the stations."
Mr Russo, a property developer, has devised 14 short stories - one for
each line on the Tube map.And he says that anyone can learn each story
in around 13 minutes. He said today: "Anyone can use my technique. You do
not need to have a good memory - just the ability to visualise bizarre
stories which act as clues to remembering the stations."
