Default Zonal fares - London stations

I asked for a day return from New Malden (Z4) to Vauxhall today (Z 1/2) - so
using the new fare table this should have been £3.20. However the SWT
ticket clerk said that when he put in Vauxhall the machine automatically
issued a New Malden to London Stations day return at £4.00 and that he
couldn't change this. Is this just a problem with the programming or is
there a problem with the zonal fares when a station is in two zones?

Advice gratefully received!
