The amazing thing is that, rather than being shown to be a disaster on
the first day, it was considered successful and attempted twice.

You have to remember the Standard stock to understand some of this. They
had a lot of lost space due to traction equipment. The M-T-M+T-T-T+M-T-M
formation gave a good concentration of extra seats in the middle of the
train I expect.

I think that a seven-car train would only have had three motor cars
though, wouldn't it, one of which would be in the middle somewhere?
I've never seen the picture of a control trailer (also in the middle
somewhere), but I assume that not too much space would be wasted.

And I think it would have been the underfloor equipment of 1938 stock
that allowed motors to be more distributed.

Northern line 38 stock had five motor cars per train.

Standard stock 7 car trains were usually M-T-T-M+CT-T-M or M-T-T-M+T-T-M
once uncoupling was abandoned. The latter was usual on the Piccadilly
when I went to school.

The bigger gain for the 1938TS was more seats and doors.

On the Northern line all 7 car trains were driving motor, motor, trailer
with two compressors, driving motor, driving motor, trailer with two
compressors, driving motor.

That's 1938 stock though, isn't it, rather than standard stock?

Six-car standard stock only had two motor cars I think, while seven-
car trains had three.

I may have been confused with 1959 stock in a previous post, where the
arrangement is pretty much the same as for 1938 stock, except that the
NDM isn't adjacent to the outer DM.

That is, in the 1959 stock, the second coach from the end was always a
trailer. Apparently not so with the 1938 stock, with the four-car
unit the other way round.

Not Standard stock, surely?
