I have a 9 am start in Tolworth on Friday. Given the price of a Peak
Travelcard from Cambridge and so I don't have to get up so early, staying in Putney at my mother's seems the best. But ticketing seems confused. I have a choice of a Saver Return to King's Cross at £16.50 (with Network Card discount) plus £1.50 Oyster (after 19:00) or £19.15 for a Saver to Zones 1 & 2 which would get me to East Putney on Thursday night. I can't use either of these on Friday morning to get to Tolworth because (a) it will be the next day and (b) it will be before 10am so the Network Card won't be valid. So I can get a single from East Putney to Tolworth for £3.80 or from Putney to Tolworth (via Clapham Junction) for £2.90. Why such an enormous (in percentage terms) premium for the shorter route via LU? For the return I seem to have a choice of Tolworth to Clapham Junction at £2.70 with the Zones 1 & 2 Saver or Tolworth to Vauxhall at £3.80, followed by Zone 1 Oyster at £1.50, with the King's Cross Saver. So the alternative totals for King's Cross and Zones 1 & 2 savers seem to be £16.50+£1.50+£2.70+£3.60+£1.50=£25.80 and £19.15+£2.70+£2.70=£24.55, assuming I go from Putney to Tolworth via Clapham Jcn. Perhaps the Putney-Tolworth and Tolworth-Clapham Jcn singles could be a Putney-Tolworth return at £4.70, saving 70p and reducing the Zones 1 & 2 saver total to £23.85. I assume a Putney-Tolworth return wouldn't be valid to Vauxhall on the return leg, despite it also being in Zone 2? Or have I got this all wrong? -- Colin Rosenstiel |

Why such an enormous (in percentage terms) premium for the shorter route via LU? No-one? I'm most surprised the fare from East Putney is so high. It's because there's a change of modes involved. Fares for through LU-NR (or vice versa) journeys have for a long time been more expensive than similar journeys that just use LU or NR - it used to be simply the price of the two separate journey legs added together. The new zonal Train Tube Fares were introduced a couple of years back, but these merely continued the trend (they are more expensive than straight Tube paper tickets, which are themselves priced at 'punitive' levels). |

Ouch! I thought they were supposed to have moved towards zonal fares on NR last January? They did, but that doesn't seem to have affected the price of Train Tube Fares yet. Was there an answer to the other question, BTW? Anyone know? Perhaps the Putney-Tolworth and Tolworth-Clapham Jcn singles could be a Putney-Tolworth return at £4.70, saving 70p and reducing the Zones 1 & 2 saver total to £23.85. I assume a Putney-Tolworth return wouldn't be valid to Vauxhall on the return leg, despite it also being in Zone 2? Correct. NR singles and returns within the zones are priced zonally, but still issued as point-to-point tickets, with the same validity as before. |

The current system was introduced in the Jan 2006 fares revision (the same time as the 'punitive' Tube paper singles). Though AFAIK, prior to that they were just the price of the separate Tube and NR legs added together, so still pretty expensive. |

There were through fares to the Southern, presumably going back to the days when they owned the District's Wimbledon Line. It is ridiculous to have to go from Putney via Clapham Junction to avid the rip-off. This will presumably go when proper zonal fares are finally adopted. I have in front of me two tickets. Both FCC Only. 1. STD SNR CDR Hassocks-London terminals £9.90 2. SDTD SNR ODTC Hassocks-R1256 £10.55 Extra cost for a Senior Railcard Holder 65p. That's a CDR Hassocks-Coulsdon South plus a ODTC in effect. That's a Travelcard, though; what we were talking about applies to singles and returns. Try comparing with a ticket to U1256 rather than R1256. |
