Default Travelcard replacement

My father's yearly travelcard (do they still call them gold cards?)
has, after a few months of careful use, stopped working at ticket
gates. Is there any possibility he could get it replaced with an
Oystercard? Failing that, is it possible that he could get it replaced
at all?

no idea.

This would seem to be an all too common reason for getting a
replacement card.

Not sure about Oystercard but my (National Rail) Gold Card had to be
replaced twice in twelve months recently, after they tried to save money by
using cheaper card for them. The rollers in the UTS gates just wore it away.
So yes, a replacement gold card is easily obtained.
