Fares Zone 4 to Windsor
Hi,
planning a visit to London I found this fare anomaly on nationalrail.co.uk: 1. Southall (STL) - Windsor (WNC) £5,40/£5,10 2. Windsor (WNR) - St. Margarets (SMG) £5,40 3. Southall (STL) - St. Margarets (SMG) via Windsor £5,10 (!) 4. Southall (STL) - Richmond (RMD) via Windsor £11,20/£10,90 So we will use 3. in combination with a zone 1-4 travelcard for a tour to Windsor. Is there anything wrong with it? Will we get that ticket at the counter in Paddington? Am I right that we can use a train that doesn't stop in St. Margarets? Thank you again for your answers! |

There's nothing wrong with that: they will sell you that ticket over the counter in Paddington, and it is valid between Southall and Windsor (note that you'll need to change at Slough). If your Travelcard is a weekly or longer season ticket, then your train from Paddington to Slough does not need to stop at Southall. However, if it is a day Travelcard, then your train from Paddington to Slough *does* need to stop at Southall[*]. The same is true coming back regarding St Margarets. If you're on day Travelcards, this could make your plan a bit of a pain as I don't think any trains from Windsor to Waterloo actually stop at St Margarets - you'd have to change to a stopping train at Twickenham. [*] no, this doesn't make much sense. no, I didn't make the rules. -- John Band john at johnband dot org www.johnband.org |

You can also buy a ticket from "Boundary Zone 4" to Windsor which is the official extension ticket. It's not possible to look up info about online, but they're usually easy to buy. Not sure if you can get one that works on both routes to Windsor. Am I right that we can use a train that doesn't *stop in St. Margarets? As John says, only if your Travelcard is weekly or longer. It looks like there's a Southall-Richmond (route Windsor) ticket for £5.10, and I think most trains stop. U -- http://londonconnections.blogspot.com/ A blog about transport projects in London |
