barriers wouldn't accept my ticket. Unlike UK ones they were too big to
jump over. Fortunately one was broken so we eventually managed to escape!

barriers. The Parisians just looked at each other and shrugged their
shoulders .

From the signs, that must be the station for Disneyland, Marne la
Vallée-Chessy station on RER line A, about 20 miles east of Paris. It's
not a Métro station. The RER has ticket gates on entry and exit, and
generally tighter security.

The Metro has tall, opaque exit gates. Seen to the left of this picture,
with the footballer vinyls:

They're at least person-operated, so no ticket is required. I notice there
seems to be some kind of emergency exit via the 'wrong' side of the entry
gates (right side of picture).

Yes, about a decade ago it used to be utterly routine for people to
jump over the barriers in Paris - a great deal has been done to make
it harder.
