Default 1915 plan to rename German road names in London

I found this interesting... yeah it's old news, but I don't recall anyone
posting any messages here at the time.

Probably because most people are eating their dinner at 1915.

Thanks for that.

In the early 40's my grandparents lived in Camberwell, and when we
walked to Rye Lane we went along Highshore Road, the street signs for
which were marked 'formerly Hanover Street'

I was told the name had been changed as 'people didn't like the old name
because of the Germans'

However in later life I found it was renamed in 1937 presumably to avoid
confusion with Hanover Park [we never used the streets the other side of
Rye Lane so didn't know there was such a place]

They told us about shops with German names having their premises renamed
or damaged

Never found out why Schweppes drinks were OK though

There were similar renamings elsewhere in the country. In Leicester,
by the railway station, these happened, at least:

*Hanover Street - Andover Street
*Saxe-Coburg Street - Saxby Street
*Gothe Street - Gotham Street

And off-geography if not topic, at about the same time in Paris the
metro stations Berlin became Liège and Allemagne became Jaurès, when
the streets above them were renamed.

I've often wondered why there's a Japan Crescent in Crouch End.

What would be the modern equivalent of this be? Wanting to rename Kabul
Terrace? Or perhaps Barclay Street and Halifax Street?

Maybe the first Afro-Caribbean prison officer lived there?
