I've just got approval to post the following pictures from a site visit to the Northern Ticket Hall at King's Cross St. Pancras station. Enjoy! http://www.flickr.com/photos/tompage...7621872604905/ Tom Thanks. What a waste of technology... http://www.flickr.com/photos/tompage...7621872604905/ Four of the platforms show identical destinations for the next three trains, but tell you the time of the trains without telling you the time now. The westbound Picc gives you the time of two trains to T4, but no indication of the time of the next train to T5. The northbound Northern Line happens to currently give you time of the next Mill Hill East train, but often would give you no clue. I bet that thing cost them 100k, but it's partly wasted because LUL always think about platforms and trains and never look inside the head of a passenger. |

Would you want this man inside your head: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tompage...7621872604905/ ? The train running tunnels are dug by TBMs, which have a big spinning slicey wheel thing, and hence these tunnels are circular in cross-section. How are the passageways dug, and why are they also circular? tom -- I don't know kung fu, I AM kung fu. |

ITYF that this is test data and it hasn't been connected to the system (I'm fairly sure that the live board won't say "stop looking at this board and get back to work, either). When it has, it'll work like every other ticket-hall-level board on the system and say "Morden 5 mins, Kennington 7 mins", etc. The LHR point is fair, but hard to do anything about until the Picc signalling is updated. The MHE one isn't: if you need to go there, you know you take the first High Barnet train and change at Finchley Central. -- John Band john at johnband dot org www.johnband.org |

Alternative reality Boltar rant from 2010: "at Arnos Grove they've just removed and replaced the ceiling tiles at enormous expense to install the wiring for new indicators. Why the hell didn't the idiots do that when they refurbished the rest of the station three years ago?" -- John Band john at johnband dot org www.johnband.org |

If they aren't going to be used for three years, they should perhaps have removed a fuse or something. AIUI they're removing (non-heritage) clocks from platform level with immediate effect, because the new dot-matrixes have one built in, and it'd be a bit rubbish to not have a clock at platform level. Again, in a heavily H&S regulated environment where you can't just unplug fixtures and stick some plastic padding in the screw-holes, it's a lot easier to run the "install dot-matrix wiring, install dot- matrix, remove clocks, de-activate clock wiring" project across all refurbs, rather than sending in clock-removing electricians, plasterers, etc when the screens are switched over. -- John Band john at johnband dot org www.johnband.org |
