So, if I read that right, the new ticket hall will have a subsurface
connection to the existing ticket halls, so you don't need to go down
escalators and then up again to get to the Met platforms from there.
That's a detail I hadn't spotted before. Time estimates are also
interesting. Doesn't help me much, since the interchange I make most
frequently there is from the MML platforms to the Victoria, but hey.

That should still save you a minute or two - your route's now going to
be more or less the hypotenuse of a triangle (MML - Northern hall -
Vic) rather than two sides (MML - Western hall - Tube hall - Vic)

The only way to get to the Met platforms is either via the Khyber Pass
and down the original stairs, or use the new entrance at StPancras. The
Northern Ticket Hall doesn't change any of this.

But as you say, there's an underground passage (presumably level)
between the Northern and "existing" ticket halls.

Even the official version is that it only saves one minute from the
Thameslink platforms

Partly because the platform access for the new route is much further
east than via the existing route.

And don't forget that if you are coming from the MML platforms (rather
than Thameslink) the escalator drops you off quite some way too far
south[1], and you have to make a u-turn and walk back north, to get to
the cross-passage with the farmers market. That will eat away into the
one minute advantage.

So-called improvement to that particular interchange was always one of
the most over-sold aspects of the re-design.

What might actually be quicker for that journey, is to exit St Pancras
via the Eurostar entrance, then head for the tube entrance that'll be on
the SW corner of Kings Cross station (not sure when that opens, as I
assume it will be after they've demolished the "temporary" extension at
the front) and down to the existing ticket hall. Of course, they can't
recommend that, as there isn't a "proper" pedestrian crossing outside
the Eurostar entrance, and you have to play chicken with the taxi rank.

[1] About where the "St" in "St Pancras" is on their diagram.

Amongst other things, this makes clear that the old Thameslink station is
indeed about level with the far end of the Vic platforms, and not miles
beyond it, which is something we argued about a bit back when we last had
a big thread on this - and that it will indeed be kept in use as an
entrance to the station.

It's possible that had already been cleared up in the interim, but if it
was, i missed it.

This ticket hall really is an incredible amount of new space, isn't it? It
looks likeit roughly doubles the volume of excavated space under KXSP.

I'm assuming the space to the left of the 'top' set of escalators is where
the escalators up to the new mainline concourse will be? So on completion of
the new concourse, the obvious way to sign 'KX/St Pancras National Rail'
from the Northern and Piccadilly platforms will be via the new routes,
whereas for the Victoria line the existing route to the front of KX will
probably still be best?
(Accepting that those with prior knowledge will still go whichever way they
want...)
In the interim period though what they probably need to do is to sign the
new routes for St Pancras and KX Suburban services only, with ECML pax still
being directed to the front of KX?

Only for limited hours though. I wanted to exit that way a couple of
months ago, and it was gated off - closes at 8pm perhaps. It's a loooong
walk from there to the main entrance at KX.
