New attempt to save tube service
By Sarah Bell

Richmond upon Thames Council are planning to join forces with Hounslow
Council to promote their alternative proposals to the £10m Crossrail scheme.

The councils have both stated in their official reports on the project that
Crossrail should consider allowing some trains to use the Hounslow loop
railway line instead of just serving Richmond via Kew Gardens.

Richmond Council's report concluded that they did not support the scheme
because the benefits to London did not outweigh the impact of losing the
District Line. It also said it would put too much pressure on Richmond
station.

Oooh! Crossrail serving Isleworth station. Yes Please!

Still doubt Crossrail is going to make it much further towards fruition

Typical RuT. They get handed the chance to transform public
transport in the borough and want to throw it away. Then,
ten years after Crossrail is completed, we'll be complaining
that other places have all the advantages (qv Kingston
1840's, 1850's).

Tony Arbour, who is not only leader of Richmond Council but also GLA member
for South West London, is apparently mailing all of his GLA constituents to
try to drum up support for his opposition to the replacement of the
District line Richmond branch by Crossrail. He is doing this without
explaining what Crossrail would provide to his constituents, and in advance
of the local consultation exhibitions by Crossrail.

Hounslow have come up with a back-of-envelope scheme that includes a
station at Strand-on-the-Green (where the District crosses the Hounslow
loop south of Gunnersbury) that by my calculations would require a gradient
of about 1 in 8 from the tunnel towards the Thames bridge.

This is vote-catching local politics at its worst, IMO.

Ahh, but all the well heeled residents of Richmond will be loosing the
Cachet of being 'within x minutes' of a tube station. This seems to be a
major yardstick in property prices.

Explaining that Crossrail will actually be BETTER than the tube for the
majority of Richmond residents journeys is obviously too difficult a concept
to grasp. It won't be a 'tube' station anymore so obviously it won't be any
good.

Also, said well heeled residents won't be able to get a direct train to
their fave shops in Kensington - they'll have to alight at that awful place
Turnham Green and shiver on a platform for unbearable amounts of time (even
up to 5 minutes can you believe it!)

Breaking News!

I take it all back - TB has just said in his Guildhall Speech that he 'very
much hopes' that in the 'near future' with a bit of 'creative accounting'
that they will be able to announce that they will be going to 'make it
(Crossrail) happen'.

So has Gordon Brown been beaten?! Hurrah!

Yes, but not (necessarily) "to Hounslow". Your subject line was misleading!
